Diagnostic Assessment Programs
 

The time from when a person suspects they might have cancer to when cancer is ruled out or diagnosed is often stressful and frustrating for patients and their caregivers. Many patients see multiple healthcare providers and have many tests before they receive a diagnosis. This process can take a long time. Ontario's Regional Cancer Programs have put in place Diagnostic Assessment Programs (DAPs) to help patients and providers deal with the challenges they face during this time.

DAPs Streamline and Centralize Cancer Diagnosis Services

DAP objectives:

Improve quality and accessibility of care for patients

Advance a patient-centered approach in diagnostic care

Drive integrated-care delivery among services and providers

Maximize value of care delivered

Once referred into a DAP, patients have access to a multidisciplinary care team. This includes a patient navigator, who is the patient's main contact and coordinates all testing for the patient throughout the diagnostic journey.

 DAPs aim to provide:

  • A single point of access for all diagnostic services
  • Diagnostic assessment according to best practices
  • Streamlined scheduling and coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations;
  • Relevant, timely information and support for patients throughout the process

DAP Locations

Lung/thoracic, colorectal and prostate cancer DAPs have been created across Ontario. More programs for streamlined diagnostic assessment have also been introduced for other cancer types, based on regional needs.
