Oncology Information System Standards
 

Guidance for Regional Cancer Programs on the key features, functionalities and standards of an Oncology Ambulatory Electronic Medical Record (aEMR) required to support integrated cancer care and treatment.

Purpose
Information Standards
Identifies end-user-determined quality evaluation themes required to support clinical and operational effectiveness through an oncology aEMR system.
Functional Requirements and Usability Provides evidence-based recommendations to guide the design, selection, implementation, sustainability and/or evaluation of an oncology aEMRs system. 
Oncology aEMR Extraction Standard Supports the transmission of Activity Level Reporting (ALR) data derived from cancer system patient-level records on radiation treatment, systemic therapy (chemotherapy) services and outpatient oncology clinic visits. The standard is based on HL7 version 3 (v3).

Anticipated Benefits 

Foundational standards and meaningful use of an Ontario oncology aEMR enabling:

  • Improved quality of care, patient safety and efficiencies for staff
  • Oncology aEMR system optimization, integration and standardization for Ontario
